The sculptors of the bronze monuments at Gettysburg
The sculptors with works at Gettysburg have very diverse backgrounds. One was a machinist who enjoyed sculpture and whose education was financed by Samuel Clemens. Another was the adopted son of Louisa May Alcott and another was known for his sketches and drawings later finding the medium of sculpture. In all cases their abilities and skill are obvious.
Most are now passed, their works admired by modern viewers but often the names of the creator’s of these sculptures are forgotten. A few are still with us and continue to create additional works but with the cost of modeling, casting and park preservation very few new sculptures will follow.
These sculptors have left us wonderful works we can study and reflect upon. Take time to view their works.
