Maj. General George Sears Greene
Sculptor: Roland Hinton Perry
Dedicated: September 27, 1907
Statue and Plinth: 7' 10" high
Bronze Foundry: Bureau Brothers, Philadelphia, Pa.
Granite Base: Hurricane Isle Granite Company, Hurricane Isle, Maine.
Total Cost of the monument: $6,863.32
The bronze statue depicts General Green pointing southward in the direction of his New York soldiers line of battle.
The history of Greene's Brigade at Gettysburg is well documented. Greene's Third Brigade would be left alone to defend Culp's Hill on the evening of July 2nd, 1863. Greene's Brigade with help from other troops would hold off a superior force of Confederate troops.
By depicting his clenched fist, the sculptor would show Greene's determination to hold Culp's Hill. Greene was 62 years old during the battle of Gettysburg.
The family of General Greene would attend the dedication of the monument. The monument would be unveiled by George S. Greene Jr.
Strapped to Green's boots, the sculptor would model the spurs and spur straps in great detail.
The gloved hand of Greene is pointing towards his brigade's entrenched battle line.
The detail of Greene's sword and scabbard are lifelike.
Unfortunately the sword support strap has become detatched and no longer connects to the scabbard ring.
The scabbard at one point has been repaired.

Veterans of Greene's Brigade attend the dedication of their commander's monument.
Please review the "Then and Now" page for more interesting images of this group of veterans that attended the event.
