The reverse of this post card reads "Stuckey's Pecan Shoppe in Historic and Beautiful Gettysburg. Pa. 2 miles South on RT 15. Gift items ans souvenirs. Large variety of the South's Finest Candies & Tropical Jellies Phone 112 R31"
Stuckey's Pecan Shoppe's originated in the 1930's when Georgia pecan farmer W.S. Stuckey opened a roadside store. Ethel Stuckey, the wife of the founder would create a variety of pecan candies and pecan log rolls. As the business grew Stuckey would add more stands and introduced the selling of Texico brand gasoline.
Opening in 1955, the Gettysburg Stuckey's was one of 350 additional Stuckey's stores opened throughout the continental US. When the Gettysburg Stuckey's opened it was the northern most store.
The owners of the Gettysburg Stuckey's were Col. J. Fuller Groom and Alexander P. Marshall both of Alexandria Virginia. Col. Groom said he chose Gettysburg to build a store "because the tourist buisness is a year-round affair here. In the winter many people from Canada and western New York and Pennsylvania head down Route 15 for the south. And in the summer of course you have the battlefield."
Col. Groom also noted there were "about 25" roadside signs that would advertise the Gettysburg store. The store would be managed by Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Arendt of Gettysburg.
The new Stuckey's would be located in front of the former Peach Orchard Motel (Lee Meade Inn). The motel was purchased and converted into apartments for store personel.
Location of the Louisiana Memorial at Gettysburg
A modern view taken near the camera position of the postcard below. The view is looking east from the Louisiana Memorial, dedicated on June 11, 1971.
The above postcard photo was taken shortly after the dedication. In the background of the photo the Stuckey's Pecan Shoppe can be seen. At the time there was a pathway leading to the memorial that is now gone.
