Maryland State Memorial
"Brothers Again"
Dedicated: November 13, 1994
Bronze cast by Shidoni Foundry located in Tesuque, New Mexico
This magnificent monument depicts two uniformed soldiers, one northern and one southern. Both are wounded helping each other cross the battlefield. Neither carries a weapon but each relies on the other to help reach safety.
Northern and Southern regiments from Maryland would be engaged on Culp's Hill during the fighting on July 2nd & 3rd 1863.
The "US" (United States) waist belt buckle worn by the northern soldier.
The Maryland State Seal waist belt buckle worn by the southern soldier.
The southern soldier has been wounded in the left leg.
Blood trickles from the right arm of the northern soldier. His hand appears useless.
The pair pass a damaged tree trunk with an embedded projectile.
Ludtke's attention to detail is amazing. A dented cup and canteen hang on the hip of the southern soldier.
An open cartridge box with its US oval hangs from the northern soldier.
The northern soldier has a firm grasp on the southern soldier's belt.
A canteen with the cork stopper removed indicates these wounded soldiers are in need of water.
The sculptor would use Civil War reenactors and original equipment to capture every detail.
The taper and rolled edge on the heel of the brogan shows wear from miles of walking.
Small nails on the heel and a hole in the sole of the brogan are part of the details Ludtke captured.
Gettysburg National Military Park employee Brian Skidmore. We found Brian in the process of buffing the recently waxed Maryland Memorial. We can't thank the employees of the park enough for their hard work and devotion to the care of these monuments.
