Joseph Walker Urner
Born: January 16, 1898
Died: July 6, 1987
Joseph Urner was born in Frederick Maryland and was the son of Judge Hammond and Mary Urner. Urner would attend the Boys Public School and High School in Frederick. In 1917 he would study engineering at Baltimore's Polytechnic School which offered preparatory courses in engineering. At this school Urner would build and operate one of the first wireless operating amateur sets in Western Maryland. with the outbreak of World War 1 Urner would enlist in the Maryland Naval Militia. Urner would serve in the North Sea as a radio operator.
After World War 1 Urner studied architecture at the Maryland Institute in Baltimore. With the coming of World War 2, Urner would serve as a Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy Sea Bees and participate in the construction projects on Guadalcanel.
As a sculptor Urner would do several works including the busts of Thomas Johnson and Roger Brooke Taney. However the Alabama Memorial would be one of his major works.
Urner signed his name to the clay model in 1933.
