This original rendering of the 13th Vermont Monument depicts Lt. Stephen Brown holding his captured sword. On the reverse of this image is the signature of the Gettysburg Military Park Commissioner John Page Nicholson.
"Design approved for statue and foundation John P. Nicholsen Chairman"
Dated 4-3-1899 the final design of the monument was approved by the park commissioners.
A close-up view of the sword and officers waist belt that was on the original rendering of the statue.
The waist belt is now gone and in conversation with Lucas Flickinger the Supervisor of the Monument Preservation Branch at the GNMP the belt is not in possession of the park. The odd part is the original Articles of Agreement dated April 17, 1899 called for the "clasp of belt carrying the "Coat of Arms of the State of Georgia, being a copy of the sword and belt captured by Lieut. Brown in Pickett's charge July 3rd."
On July 3rd, the 13th Vermont Infantry would fire into the right flank of Pickett's Division composed of all Virginians. Why did the original contract ask for the Coat of Arms of Georgia?
Perhaps the 13th Vermont survivors later recognized their error and had the belt removed, the GMP found the error or the belt was stolen.
Copy of the original Articles of Agreement with the Georgia notaion underlined.
Note the original scabbard rings have holes where the belt originally hung.
A photo of the monument c 1908 and the belt can be seen hanging from the sword.
The sword belt can be seen hanging from the sword on the original bronze statue. The end of the belt came very close to the base supporting the statue.
A close up view of the belt. Notice the buckle is round.
Georgia sword belt buckle as was specified in the original monument agreement.
Original Monument dedication program with the depiction of the monument.
Enlarged view of program. Notice the belt is hanging from the sword held by Brown.
