c1900 Postcard Image
Current view
The most noteable features of this "Then and Now" photograph is the deterioration of the stone fence and the additional trees on East Cemetery Hill.
When standing at the photographer's original camera position although the stone fence has greatly deteriorated many of the original stones in the fence remain where they were.

Close up view of some of the easy to locate rocks that can be found in the original image. They remain nested nearly as they were over 100 years ago.
Other points of interest.
"A" is the 4th Ohio Regimental Monument. This monument was dedicated in 1887. The monument was cast as "White Bronze" a combination of the metals zinc and tin. This material was not durable and was eventually banned from the Gettysburg Battlefield.
"B" shows the earthen lunettes of Battery E, First New York Light Artillery attached to Reynolds Battery.
"C" indicates location of current General Oliver O. Howard equestrian statue.
"A" Its interesting to note the soldier atop the 4th Ohio monument is facing East in the C1900 image and South in the modern image.
"B" The lunettes today seem lower than in the c1900 image. Perhaps the Civilian Consevation Corps (1933-1942) rebuilt these or just general erosion. Another good reason to not climb the lunettes.
"C" General Oliver O. Howard equestrian statue.
"D" The water tower that can be used as a useful landmark from different areas of the battlefield.
